Frequently asked questions
How is Rane corporation
involved?
Rane corporation has taken our hardware design and tweaked it to their own
famously high standards. Rane manufactures, distributes and supports Scratch
LIVE.
So what does Serato do?
Serato Audio Research maintains the software, and is responsible for
releasing new versions of the software, firmware and drivers.
What does it do?
Serato Scratch Live allows you to scratch any digital sample or sound file
on your computer using your existing turntables as the controller.
How does it work?
Special vinyl included with Serato Scratch contains a control signal that
allows your computer to track the motion of the record, simulating the same
movement within the digital sample.
Can I use CD turntables?
Absolutely. The turntable inputs on the interface can be set to phono or
line level. The CDs needed for control are included, no extra equipment is
required.
But what is it like to use?
Serato Scratch LIVE feels and sounds just as though you are scratching and
cueing an ordinary record.
What sort of setup do I
need to use Serato Scratch Live?
A computer, one or two turntables and a DJ mixer.
What platforms does it run
on?
Scratch LIVE runs natively on Mac OS X and Windows XP
What is the latency?
The total system latency can be as low as 7ms if your computer is fast
enough to cope with the increased load on the processor. You can adjust the
latency of Scratch LIVE in software to cater to the system you have.
What happens if I pick up
the needle and drop it somewhere on the record?
Scratch LIVE not only tracks the relative movement of the record when the
needle is in the groove, but also can detect exactly where the needle is
placed on the record. So when you drop the needle, the song you are playing
instantly jumps to a new part of the song.
What's included in the
package?
Two vinyl control records, two control CDs, the software CD, four RCA
cables, a USB cable and of course the USB interface to connect your
turntables to your computer.
What if I break the control
record? What if it wears out?
Replacement records can be purchased for $10.
But why would I want to use
turntables anyway?
That question is beyond the scope of this FAQ.
