RaneWare is only compatible with Windows 95 and Windows 98SE*

General Description

The RPE 228d Equalizer features high-security remote control. This digital equalizer is programmed by computer (PC compatible) via the RS-232 serial port. The computer may be removed after programming, or left connected to recall memories exclusively. As many as 16 units at a time may be daisy-chained. A recessed Default button on the rear panel recalls Memory 1 in case of computer failure.

Each channel has 28 bands of 1/3-octave interpolating constant-Q filters for predictability and minimal interaction between bands. The boost/cut range is ±10 dB in 0.5 dB steps. Low and high cut filters have a wide adjustment range (low cut to 200 Hz and high cut to 1 kHz). The digital filters are designed to match the previously available analog RPE 228.

No batteries are needed (EEPROM memory). The stored Memories are non-volatile and may be recalled by remote switch contact closures (Memory Recall Port). The translation between the 8 closures and 16 Memories is programmable. Current settings are also non-volatile.

Input and Output levels are independently controllable with a ±12 dB range in 1 dB steps, with settings stored in each Memory.

The RPE 228d features balanced cross-coupled inputs and outputs. Euroblock terminals are used for audio (and remote switch recall) connections. Shield ground connections are to the chassis.

Rane's Windows-compatible software (95 and 98), called RaneWare, is included at no extra cost, allowing the units to be controlled in real time. The latest version of RaneWare is available at Rane's Internet site, http://www.rane.com. The software's easy-to-use graphical interface features graphic sliders, the computed true EQ response curve, control of all parameters, and extensive on-line help. Memories may be recalled, copied, and stored. A Site Control Panel is provided with password protection so that all units can recall stored memories without further access. Local Edit mode allows curves to be viewed and edited without affecting a unit. These curves can then be sent to a unit or saved in a file. The software is operational even without an RPE 228d connected. The Rane RPD 1 Programming and Diagnostics unit may be used to control the RPE 228d from a remote location using a modem. The RPE 228d uses the same RW 232 commands as the RPE 228.

The unit's firmware may be replaced with new versions, uploaded from a computer through the RW 232 serial port.

See the Data Sheet link below for complete specifications.

You may download RaneWare now.

* Running RaneWare under Windows XP's emulation modes for 95 and 98 has been frustratingly inconsistent; some PCs work fine, some do not work at all, while still others work one day, but stop working the next day. This forces us to officially support only Windows 95 and 98SE. Many of our RaneWare products are being superceded by our Drag Net products.

MRS 4 Memory Recall Switch

The MRS 4 provides a simple solution to recalling Memories from a remote location for products having an MRP (Memory Recall Port) or a VIP (Versatile Input Port).

The MRS 4 is intended for use in Normal mode, allowing up to 4 Memories to be recalled by contact closure. These are radio buttons: engaging one button (in, changing to green) causes any of the other three to disengage (out, changing to black). Space is provided next to each button for labelling.

Firmware Update for RPE 228d rev 4.7

This update is for older RPE 228d units, not the RPE 228. Please don't use this with the very newest units (shipped with rev 4.8).

Factory firmware revisions were between 4.5 and 4.7. This can be viewed using the Device | Status menu item in RaneWare.

This revision works only with units having the following serial numbers:

Download RPE 228d firmware update 4.7

This update allows units to work properly with the Site Control Panel (and all broadcast/global messages). They are also compatible with LinearX software and the changes to EQ band levels are processed somewhat faster.

To update RPE 228d firmware, download the link to your RW232 directory (right-click this link to get your computer to save to this file to the correct directory). Run RaneWare and make a backup file of the RPE memories by selecting Backup Memories to File. Once you have made a backup file, upload the firmware file to the RPE by selecting Update Firmware from the Device pull-down menu. While the firmware is uploading, the COM indicator continually flashes. Once the firmware has finished, the RPE resets and reloads its default memory values. In case of a problem, use the Restore Memories from File and Restore Names from File to retrieve your old settings. View Device Status to verify that the Firmware Rev is 4.7.
